Room for Peace

Sources and about

The site is non-partisan but not without a position: it is for peace. This page explains how information was checked, what was checked and what was not yet.

What this site stands on

  1. Facts do not change with perspective: Hamas is a terrorist organisation and 7 October was a brutal terrorist attack. Recognising Palestinian rights does not justify Hamas.
  2. Israel’s right to exist as an independent, sovereign state, in security.
  3. The Palestinian people’s right to an independent, sovereign state and to life in security and dignity.
  4. The right of all peoples of the region to self-determination, security and dignity.
  5. Absolute condemnation of terror, violence against civilians, kidnapping and incitement to harm people, whoever commits them.
  6. Opposition to antisemitism, racism, hatred of Arabs and Muslims, and dehumanisation.
  7. Commitment to dialogue, mutual recognition and the peaceful resolution of conflicts.

These are the site’s principles. They are not a claim that a political settlement has been reached or that its borders are agreed.

How we worked

Order of preference for sources: the text of the agreement or declaration itself; government archives, the UN and presidential libraries; memorial and research centres; academic research; and quality press for current developments. Wikipedia is used for orientation only.

Every substantive claim carries a numbered source. Each source is marked as opened and read at build time, or as a link that could not be opened from the build environment (for example the Knesset site, which is geo-blocked from here).

The site keeps five things apart: documented fact, scholarly interpretation, a party’s position, a political proposal, and the site’s own values. A historical dispute is shown as a dispute, with each position attributed.

Classification: a peace treaty, normalization, an interim agreement, an armistice or ceasefire, talks that did not mature, and an initiative or proposal are different things. Document type, signature, implementation and current status are set separately. A signature does not mean everything was carried out.

The site does not confuse a government with a people, an organisation with a public, or civilians with combatants, and assigns no collective blame. Accuracy comes before symmetry.

What has not been done yet

  • Media: photographs and portraits use local files. YouTube players load only on click, with source links retained. Playback depends on embed permissions and internet access.
  • The Hebrew, Arabic and English content has not undergone a complete human editorial review.
  • The Hebrew “soldier in the army of peace” wording was checked against the Rabin Center transcript. Documented summaries of the Bar-Ilan speech, Venice Declaration and Fahd plan were added. The pains-of-peace quotation attributed to Begin remains unverified and was not added.
  • Information about 2025–2026 events and recent statuses is inherited from the original research. It has not been fully reverified in this edition and needs dated-source review before public launch.
  • Some song cards still link to a search rather than a specific recording. They are labelled as searches, not verified recordings.
  • The maps are schematic; they do not show Areas A, B and C, Sinai force-limitation zones or historical before-and-after maps.
  • Automated link checks test reachability, not factual accuracy. Blocking or a timeout does not prove a source is missing. External sources also require editorial reading.
  • The site supports keyboard use and reduced motion but has not had a complete screen-reader accessibility audit.
  • The working edition asks search engines not to index it. Configure a domain and complete content review before enabling publication mode.

The name

“מקום לשלום” in Hebrew and “مكانٌ للسلام” in Arabic say two things at once: a site that is a place, and the assumption that there is a place for peace. In English we chose Room for Peace, which carries the same double meaning better than a literal translation. No domain availability was checked.

Credits and licences

Maps: Natural Earth, public domain. Fonts: Google Fonts under open licences. The peace symbol was designed by Gerald Holtom in 1958 and was never copyrighted. Illustrations on the site are original. Photos and videos: see the “Symbols, speeches, songs” page. Symbols, speeches, songs

Maintenance

Each agreement is one file in the content folder, in three languages. Adding an agreement or updating a status means editing the file, running the validator and rebuilding. Full instructions are in the README in the source code.
